Easy Fall Decorating Ideas: Cozy Layers Without the Overhaul

From pinecones to pumpkins, here’s how I styled my entryway, tabletop, and front door with cozy, affordable fall layers.

I’m a huge fall person, and the older I get, the more I realize I’m not alone.

There’s something irresistible about slowing down, cooler air, and cozy layers begging to be lived in. All the best holidays and so many gatherings are just around the corner.

My favorite thing about this season is the gear-up for it. I love decorating our home year-round, but there’s something extra special about fall and Christmas.

And one thing about me: I will always reuse decor. I might add a new piece here and there if it catches my eye, but most of what you’ll see in our home has been styled for years in different ways. Some of the pinecones, baskets, and vases in these photos go back five seasons. I think that’s what makes them even more meaningful.

For me, neutral tones have been the easiest way to transition between seasons without spending a fortune. Then I decide which spaces deserve a seasonal shift — this year it’s the front door, the entryway, a cozy tabletop, plus a few swaps in linens, lighting, and fragrance throughout the house.

This weekend, I started refreshing a few spaces: a tabletop vignette, my entryway, and our front door. Here’s how it all came together.

A Front Door Refresh

Outdoors, I started with our base — tall planters that usually hold fiddle leaf fig trees — and swapped in these stunning faux cedar trees. I then grabbed a few pumpkins from our family visit to Gilchrist Farm and added them to the base of the planter. I’ll definitely be adding a ton more, but this is enough to whisper fall without going full harvest…yet.

For the florals, I added some place holders to get a feel of what I do/don’t like. For example, I love the height of the lavender stems, just not the color for fall. So, I’ll search for similar structured ones and pop them in round wicker baskets to add a warmer vibe.

For now, I’m just letting the evergreens + pumpkins have a moment.

And because I don’t want them to go to waste, these pumpkins will pull double duty — some will eventually become carving fun or baked into recipes, and if any remain at the end of the season, we’ll take them back to the Gentle Barn so the animals can enjoy them. 🍂

💡Tip: Start with one big swap (trees, pumpkins, or a wreath) and let the rest build slowly.

Entryway Styling

I once read that your entryway sets the tone for the whole house. Ever since I styled ours to reflect the rest of our home, it’s felt so much more cohesive.

Since this is the first spot we see when we walk in, it deserved a fall refresh.

Almost everything here is reused — the tall mirror (HomeGoods, 2 years ago), the stone bowl (filled with pinecones I’ve owned for 5 years and refresh with a seasonal spray👇🏾), and layered blankets from my fall bin. The only new pieces are a bundle of Pottery Barn stems, which balance the green outdoors that stays year-round where we live, and these gorgeous rechargeable wall sconces from Amazon!

I layered textures — a fluffy knit blanket (owned since 2018) over a deep brown, waffle blanket (last year’s Amazon find), stacked in a basket for softness. On the table, the pine cone bowl sits next to upright books, bud vases, and an amber candle I’ve had since last season.

💡Tip: Mix grounded textures (dark tones, pinecones) with something touchable (a knit blanket, a soft throw). The contrast creates depth and makes a space feel seasonal.

A Candlelit Table Top

This little table has seen many date nights since our baby became a toddler 🥹 so it deserved a cozy upgrade too. The good news? Every single thing here was reused.

If you’re following along on my IG, you’ll remember the below photo. We already had the large cozy neutral chairs (one on each side of the table), fall-ish paintings on the wall, and an olive tree.

For the fall refresh, I stacked those books in a wicker tray (previously used for toys), swapped in an amber candle (borrowed from the kitchen), two pumpkins (one woven, one ceramic), and — you guessed it — my trusty pinecones.

The last thing I did was reuse some of the florals from my flower arranging tutorial and popped them in the white vase.

Tip: Shop your own home. A tray from one room, florals from another — styled in a new way, they feel fresh again.

Fragrance for Fall

Seasonal decorating isn’t just about what you see — it’s also about how your home smells. For me, fragrance completes the cozy atmosphere.

Every season, I refresh my five-year-old pinecones with a homemade spray (kid- and pet-safe) instead of buying new ones. You can make something similar by mixing:

  • Base: distilled water (to help prevent bacteria growth)

  • Optional preservative: 1–2 teaspoons vodka or witch hazel (helps the oils disperse evenly + extends shelf life)

  • Essential oils: I love orange, vetiver, or cinnamon leaf (add drops according to your preferences)

Shake before each use and spritz onto pinecones, fabrics, or into the air for an instant fall refresh. Use within 2–3 weeks if made with just water, or up to 1–2 months if you’ve added alcohol.

And if you prefer a more hands-on, cozy option, a Fall Pot Simmer is another great way to scent your home. (Stay tuned — I’ll be sharing the exact recipe and a video in an upcoming post!)

One Layer at a Time

This season, I’m reminding myself that transitions don’t need to happen overnight. A candlelit table, a styled entryway, and a refreshed front door are more than enough to carry us over the next few weeks.

The beauty of in-between seasons is that you can savor them one layer at a time. Add a blanket here, a pumpkin there — it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to feel intentional.

I hope you’ve enjoyed getting a peek inside our home. It feels so cozy and we absolutely love it.

Here’s to savoring the season and letting our homes grow as gently as the fall around us. 🤎

With Love,
Ambyr
